Chargers’ 4-Game Win Streak Snapped by Sauk Valley

Sauk Valley came out on top in a back-and-forth final few minutes to defeat the Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team 68-64 on Thursday at John M. Lewis Gymnasium, snapping a four-game win streak for the Chargers.
KEY MOMENTS
- Sauk Valley (16-8 overall, 5-2 Arrowhead Conference) led by as many as 12 in the first half, but the Chargers (16-7, 3-2) closed to within 41-34 at halftime.
- Sandburg continued to chip away and took its first lead of the second half at 60-59 with 4:05 to play on a rebound basket by sophomore Deandrey Robinson (Peoria, Ill./Peoria). That started a string of four lead changes and a tie in the closing minutes.
- A pair of free throws by Chargers freshman Noah Young (Colfax, Ill./Ridgeview) tied it at 64 with :54.9 left, but the Skyhawks’ Fred Brown provided the go-ahead bucket with a driving layup with :45 to play.
- Late in the shot clock on the ensuing Sandburg possession, Carter Fayhee (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) missed a 3-point attempt with :14.1 seconds to go. Sauk Valley’s Nolan Govig sank two free throws at :06.9 to close it out.
SANDBURG STANDOUT
Freshman guard Scott Gowan (Rockford, Ill./Rockford East) powered the Chargers’ second-half comeback, scoring Sandburg’s first 10 points out of intermission. Gowan finished with a team-best 21 points, highlighted by four 3s.
OTHER TOP CHARGERS
Robinson had 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting and added a game-high 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double.
